The Deceptive Shiawassee...
>> Saturday, August 16, 2008
Well, I can honestly say I had my WORST
kayaking experience tonight!
OK, well worst makes it sound bad, but it was definitely
the most adventurous!
And to think, I never even left Fenton....

The evening started out nice....
Sun was beginning to set...
Pretty trees...
Calm waters...

I even look happy!

This was the first of many down logs we had to cross.

One of the several bridges we went under...
You can see the water level is very low, made it tough...
Even in our "flat-bottom boats"! HA :)
Unfortunately there is no footage to prove our adventure, but just ask...
We'll tell you the story!!
A couple hours past and the sun was gone. We had climbed over more logs, been tipped out of our kayaks, wadded in hip deep water, scraped bottom over low water levels,
nearly lost flip-flops in the muck...
all the while, escaping that mysterious noise in the brush...
WHAT WAS THAT?
We were going delerious, so we decided to yank out our boats at Georgetown Apartment complex, where my mother came to our rescue.
Thanks Mom! We owe ya :)

Well, we never made it to our destination...
but there's always next time!!
Or maybe we'll just head for that peaceful lake instead....
The thought of the Shiawassee will definitely come back to haunt me!! HA ;)

We can testify to everything that she said. We never want to go there ever again....they should change the name to Timber Creek.:)
Awww c'mon guys !!
Headwaterstrails Inc. cleared 7 miles of the Shiawassee river between Holly and Fenton. We've just started clearing past the Fenton dam (Strom Park area) toward and past Bush Park on towards Lake Penomah. VOLUNTEERS getting paid nothing to take chainsaws into the water making the river navigable for folks like you. Another couple months and we'll have many open miles for your kayak adventures. In fact a national magazine "Outdoor Life" is following our progress. National outdoor gear retailers like REI have given us funds to build a bridge at WaterWorks Park in Holly.
It can only get better, hang in there and thanks for having the guts to give it a try already.
